Yesterday I received a beautiful card in the mail that included a DVD, beach towel and information about the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
In case you are not familiar with the organization, it is a non-profit dedicated to preserving marine life and environment while inspiring the human spirit through leadership in education, research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release. Two dolphins, Winter and Hope, were rescued by CMA and the DVD shares their journey. Today, these dolphins, who are wounded but thriving, work with handicapped veterans and children sharing a connection of living with challenges. It’s amazing.
The package arrived from one of my advisors as an example of what they were sending out to inspire their clients and share their passion and support for this organization. The note wished me Happy Holidays and simply noted how special this place was to them. Not only did I appreciate the effort, but I will not forget it. A few weeks back I wrote Your Brand is Not a Gift, so this package was perfectly timed.
So the question for you is, how are you engaged in your community? What are you passionate about and how do you tell others? Many firms tell “rookie” advisors to go out and find an organization to get involved with immediately. This leads to a lot of conversations about what to find and where to look. My advice is always to let it come to you. Be mindful and aware, talk to others, and read about what is happening in your area. In other words, find something you really care about and will be committed to supporting. Volunteering just to volunteer and find clients is not only disingenuous, but those around you will pick up on it immediately.
Over the holidays, consider what you are doing, or would like to do, to give back. It’s the perfect time of the year to set a plan in motion for 2016.
