Summertime (and the livin’s easy)

It’s been fun to talk to advisors this week and hear what everyone did over Memorial Day weekend. Just about everyone experienced wonderful weather and more than a few got a bit too much sun.

It always amazes me how summer often appears overnight. You’ll be enjoying a nice spring one day and then the heat and humidity shows up in full force the next!

For most advisors and planners, the pace usually slows down a bit as your clients may be more difficult to reach or their attention is drawn elsewhere.

As a result, summer can be a fantastic time to get a little more balance in your work and professional life. Find ways you can eat better, sleep better, and get in some workout time, as well as enjoy activities and travel with your family.

Consider using some of your extra time to:

  • Clean up the clutter that can be easy to ignore when you have a constant stream of client meetings and calls. Better yet, consider creating a better system to keep things organized. You can unsubscribe from newsletters, determine what information (digital or paper) can be purged, or make that long-delayed move to the cloud.
  • Host a few fun social gatherings with small groups of clients and their friends. Invite them to a ball game, concert, or barbecue. Make sure to check out local festivals and events.
  • Catch up on your stack of reading or get started on that certification program you’ve been thinking about.
  • Take your COIs out for lunch or drinks to socialize and maybe brainstorm ways you could collaborate in the Fall.
  • Determine how you can use your knowledge and experience to support your colleagues internally or through an organization like the Financial Planning Association.
  • Plan your Fall marketing activities including events you’ll host or attend.

Next week I’ll be taking my family on a twice-delayed trip to Disney World. I’m looking forward to spending time with my loved ones (and a lot of strangers in line)!
